Dr. Rugenstein invited to participate in annual archaeology expo

Dr. Ernest R. Rugenstein, adjunct professor in the History, Philosophy, and Social Sciences Department, has been invited to participate in The Archaeological Institute of America’s Riverside and Inland Empire Society’s 8th Annual Archaeology Expo being held virtually during International Archaeology Day on Oct. 17, 2020. He also will participate in a special YouTube channel throughout California’s Archaeology Month, October 2020.

Dr. Rugenstein will be highlighting his current dig, the Baker Sheep Farm Site outside Grant, NY. The site was a sheep farm from the 1830’s to the 1860’s. By the 1868 map, the property is vacant, but still listed on maps. Later maps of 1900 and 1906 have no indication of a farm at all. Marginal land that had been used for sheep was no longer useful as Western land (Ohio) opened up for farming. With railroads and canals available for moving produce, farming in New York State of the 1870’s changed a great deal.

Dr. Rugenstein has been working at the dig since 2017 and has investigated various areas of the farm. Currently he is investigating part of the house that could have been a kitchen.
